13 members gathered in the Murray Room of the Howe Library in Hanover NH for the monthly meeting.
George Angwin lead the discussion of An Old Captivity. George brought along an original 1940s map of Greenland, Iceland Canada and the United States, which showed several of the places mentioned by Shute in the book.
The focus of the story is on the modern day sea plane adventure to the north Atlantic countries and the ancient adventures of the Vikings with their Scottish slaves, Heki and Hekja. Comparison was made between the relationship of the modern day characters Ross and Alex and the relationship of the ancient characters.
The forward to the book stated that Heki and Hekja were real people back in the Viking days. Laure Schneider looked up the information on the internet and found that part of the Shute story to be true.
Next meeting Saturday 02 November 2013. The topic of the discussion will be No Highway. If you need to borrow a copy of this book, please contact Laura Schneider at firstname.lastname@example.org.
